In the second half of 2026 a new chapter in bilateral diplomacy & South-South Cooperation unfolds. The diplomatic and economic landscape between East Africa and the South Caucasus is experiencing a noticeable shift. Even though formal diplomatic relations between Kenya and Azerbaijan were established some 20 years ago, the countries were largely terra incognita for each other. Kenya was mainly known in Azerbaijan because of the famous wildlife (remember the unforgettable “Madagascar’ cartoon?) while Azerbaijan was at times confused with “Abidjan” – the capital city of Ivory Coast. In the last few years, however, relations have expanded into a dynamic, multi-faceted partnership anchored in trade, technological exchange, urban innovation, and shared Global South advocacy.
From the halls of multilateral summits in Nairobi and Baku to bilateral agreements, the partnership trajectory reflects a strategic alignment between two nations positioned as regional gateways in their respective corners of the world. The overarching focus remains clear: building resilient, long-term partnerships aimed at delivering tangible socio-economic outcomes and promoting intercultural dialogue not just between the two countries, but also between the regions.

AZERBAIJAN AT THE GLOBAL STAGE
Having liberated its internationally recognized territories in 2020 and 2023, Azerbaijan is working actively with the neighboring Armenia on turning the 30 years long chapter of hatred and animosity in the best interest of the two nations. This Peace process, actively supported by US President Donald Trump who hosted the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington in August 2025 offers unique opportunity for major regional partnership.

It is for this same reason that for the past 4 Years, Azerbaijan has been organizing the Shusha Global Media Forum in Shusha, in Karabakh

To understand the backdrop of this growing cooperation, one must look beyond diplomatic agreements to the shores of the Caspian Sea. Strategically situated where Eastern Europe and Western Asia meet in the South Caucasus, Azerbaijan—often called the Land of Fire due to its natural subterranean gas flames at sites like Yanar Dag—presents a unique blend of ancient heritage and rapid modern development. Despite 95% of its population identifying as Muslim, it is a secular state where various religions and traditions coexist seamlessly. A journey from Nairobi through Istanbul leads to the striking architecture of Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, where the country's renowned culture of hospitality becomes immediately apparent.

Culture, History, and Urban Transformation: A Culture of Warmth and Living History
In Azerbaijan, hospitality is woven into daily life. "A guest is a gift from God," goes the local saying. Nothing begins without tea—served in traditional pear-shaped glasses (armudu), accompanied by sugar cubes, jams (yes, Azerbaijanis take jam with their tea), baklava (called pakhlava in Azerbaijani it’s different from Turkish and Arabic cousins) and continuous refills. Given how big tea is in Kenya this is one natural bridge which is already there!

Meals such as plov, dolma, qutab, and kebabs (you simply can’t go anywhere without this local version of nyama choma!) are generous affairs designed to encourage conversation and community. Guests who arrive to the table covered by various starters are usually surprised to hear “this was just the beginning” (after all, starters are only getting you started) with multiple hot appetizers and main courses to follow).
Old City

In the heart of the capital lies “Icherisheher” (the Old City, or Internal City)- a living historical reserve featuring stone fortresses and architecture spanning from the 12th to the 19th centuries. Contrasting this ancient core is the transformation of Baku’s former 19th-century industrial "Black City" oil refinery zone into the pristine, eco-friendly “Baku White City”—a modern global benchmark for urban land reclamation. Even street life carries a distinct warmth: street cats sleep peacefully in colorful, custom-built wooden shelters placed along city walkways, cared for by community residents.
Baku White City: History
For more than a century, since the 1870s, the centre of Baku Bay was a focal point for the refining, storage and transportation of oil. This resource, a gift of nature and also known as “black gold,” spurred a major economic boom for the country, creating countless opportunities for prosperity. As a result of its pivotal role in industrial activities, this area, an integral part of Baku, became known as “Black City”. This continued throughout the 20th century, especially during the period when Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union.
Unfortunately, the extensive industrial exploitation also took a heavy toll on the environment, leading to significant ecological degradation. The necessity arose for sustainable redevelopment to restore the balance between industrial progress and environmental preservation.
Collective effort following the decree entitled “The Comprehensive Action Plan on Improving the Environmental Situation in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2006-2010,” instigated the Baku White City project. The project stands as a living testament to Azerbaijan’s dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability, exemplifying the country’s growing role on the global stage as a proponent of climate action.
The Baku White City Project is hence a remarkable transformation, turning an ecological disaster into an area of comfortable residential complexes, high-quality public transport, green spaces, sustainable business centres and innovative architecture, while also serving as a centre for modern art and leisure.

Throughout the country, heritage is alive in poetry recited over tea and the intricate patterns of hand-woven carpets. "We came to Azerbaijan seeking wide landscapes and historical walls," reflects journalist Muhoro Pius W. "We left with melodies, stories, and a deep appreciation for the shared human experience. The physical geography was memorable, but it was the warmth and openness of the people that defined the journey."

Azerbaijan consistently punches above its weight on the global stage, having hosted major international gatherings like COP29 and WUF13. This legacy of global engagement is further highlighted by the country's successful two-year chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and its vibrant sports and economic calendar—most notably the milestone 10th anniversary of the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku –between September 24th-26th 2026 (more info here; https://www.formula1.com/en/racing/2026/azerbaijan), alongside the recently concluded International Investment Forum in Baku,Azerbaijan between September 25th-26th 2026.
We started by emphasizing how little people in Azerbaijan and Kenya knew about each other only several years ago. It goes without saying there is still much to learn and do to fully harness the partnership potential, but as Kenya and Azerbaijan continue to strengthen their diplomatic and commercial ties, the trajectory indicates expanding trade channels, enhanced technological collaboration, and, last but certainly not least, deeper people-to-people connections. Through active institutional engagement both nations are laying the groundwork for a robust, mutually beneficial relationship in the years ahead.

“Kenya and Azerbaijan are working actively on the areas considered among national priorities by both countries e.g. sustainable urban housing, climate change and energy, including green energy transition and beyond - ICT, agriculture, youth empowerment through education and more. The bond between Azerbaijan and Kenya represents a forward-looking South-South partnership" says H.E. Ambassador Sultan Hajiyev.
